What are a Radiant Cut Diamond’s Dimensions?

Radiant cut combines the shape of an emerald cut with the brilliance of a round cut. It is available in square and rectangular shapes, typically with beveled corners. The recommended length-to-width ratio for radiant cut diamonds is 1.00 - 1.35.

About the Radiant Cut Diamond

Gem cutter Henry Grossbard discovered the radiant cut in 1977 in New York. His intention was to combine the finest elements of the round brilliant cut and the emerald cut.

Learn about Radiant Cut Diamonds

Grossbard wanted to change the industry standard on cutting rectangular and square diamonds. But he didn’t succeed immediately.

Radiant cuts only burst into the scene when sparkly diamonds became the rage in the 1980s. Especially because they were more brilliant than other diamonds with angular cuts.

Maximising Your Radiant Cut Diamond’s Size

Radiant cuts can have up to 70 facets which create exceptional brilliance and fire. They also have a unique cracked, crushed ice appearance. Radiants typically look larger than Asscher, princes, cushion, and emerald cuts. An elongated radiant cut may also appear larger than a round cut.Like all other brilliant diamonds, radiants hide inclusions quite well. It means you can go as low as SI1 or even SI2, as long as the stone is visibly clear. For color, grades H and higher pair well with white gold and platinum settings. If yellow or rose gold is your choice of setting, you could drop down to an I grade.

Finally, when it comes to radiant cut diamonds, make sure the corners are even and symmetrical.

FAQ

What is the difference between emerald cut and radiant cut?

Emerald cut diamonds have a step cut to create the 'hall of mirrors effect'. Radiant cuts have the vivid fire and brilliance of round brilliant diamonds.

Do radiant cut diamonds look smaller?

2 carat Radiant diamond

When compared with a classic round diamond, radiants have about 4% smaller face-up size. But the diagonal measurement on a radiant cut can create an optical illusion. It could make the radiant diamond appear larger than a round brilliant of the same carat weight.

Why is radiant cut cheaper?

Yes, radiants are one of the most affordable diamonds. This is because the cutting process minimizes waste. As a result, a larger percentage of the original diamond is retained.
