What are an Emerald Cut Diamond’s Dimensions?
The emerald cut is a rectangular, step-cut shape with trimmed corners. It’s low on brilliance, but compensates for its lack of sparkle with a hypnotizing “hall of mirrors effect”.
Emerald cuts look larger than other shapes thanks to their large table facet. Their typical length-to-width ratio is 1.25 - 1.65, but square (1:1) emerald-cut diamonds also exist.

The emerald cut is one of the oldest diamond shapes. Its origins go back to the table cut of the 1500s. At the time, stonecutters used the Emerald cut to shape emeralds. The shape’s step-cut anatomy meant there was less pressure on the soft gemstone during the cutting process. This prevented chipping and breaking.
Later, diamond cutters began to cut diamonds in the same shape. In the 1920s, when the Art Deco movement was in full swing, the shape became a huge hit. Its “hall of mirrors” effect, clean lines, and geometric patterns were a perfect match with the day’s trends.
Today, the Emerald cut is a popular alternative to the round cut, radiant cut, and oval. Its size and unique look make it a popular option for engagement ring buyers.
