What are a Pear Cut Diamond’s Dimensions?
This pear shape is a combination of a marquise cut and an oval cut. It has a rounded edge on one end and a pointy edge on the other. On a good pear cut, the shoulders, or the sides of the rounded edge are even. And the wings, or the sides of the pointy edge are gently curved.
The optimal length-to-width ratio of a pear cut diamond is between 1.45 - 1.75. But when searching for that ideal diamond, don’t discount your personal preference.
About the Pear Cut Diamond
Also known as the teardrop or pendeloque cut, the pear cut is a modified brilliant cut. That means it sparkles with amazing fire and brilliance. Although it has a modern look to it, the pear cut actually originated in the mid-15th century in Flanders.
A diamond cutter named Lodewyk van Bercken invented a diamond-polishing wheel in 1475. The wheel enabled him to place facets onto a diamond with complete symmetry for the first time. Later that year, he invented the world’s first pear cut diamond. Although it wasn’t popular at the time, cutters continued to improve the cut. But they kept the 58 facets of the original cut.
The pear cut diamonds we see today are the result of achieving an ideal length-to-width ratio. It maximized the stone's sparkle to catch more attention than before.
Maximising Your Pear Cut Diamond’s Size
Pear cuts display color more than other cuts, especially around the pointy edge. You can end up with an off-white appearance if you choose a low color grade. Pick a stone that’s H or higher on the color chart for white gold or platinum setting. J will work for yellow or rose gold setting.
The good news is, what you end up paying for color can be offset by the clarity grade. As pear cuts are great at hiding inclusions, you can go as low as SI1 or SI2 on the clarity scale for an eye-clean look.
Watch out for large, dark bowties in pear cuts. You can't avoid them, but you can select one that's small and gives some sparkle.
